Markets in Decline
It’s May 11, 2022, and the markets are in decline. Of course, I could give you facts, figures, data, and try to interpret some of that for you. But today, I’d rather just talk about the emotions of it.
Running a 5K
Come with me to last Saturday, and let’s talk about how running a 5K might be similar to investing.
May 7, 2022—I’m about to run another 5K. I want to say something about running for a second. I enjoy running, and if you jog it, it’s no big deal, but if you run it, a 5K is quite an endurance test. The first mile, you’re trying to get loose, your lungs are starting to breathe heavier, and it’s not easy. By mile two, two and a half, to mile three, it’s sometimes painful.
And yet, you have to embrace the suck. You have to know it’s going to hurt and just do it anyway. Isn’t life a lot like that? Not all of life is a vacation.
So, just a quick comparison to the stock market: if you get into investing, there are going to be times when you just have to know it’s not going to be fun. You have to embrace the suck—you knew it going in, and you just have to endure it. And you hope—if you don’t have hope that it’ll recover after a decline, you’d never start in the first place.
If it’s any encouragement at all, embrace the suck—in the markets, in life, and get out there, start running, lose some weight. You’ll really benefit in the long run.
Embrace the Suck
Life, too, is full of ups and downs. Happy days, days of setbacks, disappointments—you pick yourself up and move on. Sometimes it takes time.
There’s my buddy Dale Tommy coming across the finish line. Did I tell you that last half mile would suck? Oh my goodness, it was worse than that! But I had to embrace the suck. I’m really happy about the time—about 25 and a half minutes. Hit my goal. God bless y’all.
Why Run?
Why do I run, if it’s that painful? I’m not sure I can answer that exactly. Certainly, race day is fun. Of course, I do it to stay healthy. There’s a certain sense of accomplishment. Still, I have to just embrace the suck—it’s just part of it. And I have to believe that the pain is temporary. It’s strange, I suppose, but I guess I can push through it and endure it, just because running has its own reward.
Right now, the markets aren’t doing well. In my opinion, it won’t always be that way. Meanwhile, maybe just embrace the suck—it’s just part of it.

Let me ask you: was there a time when you had to embrace the suck? Maybe you were in the military, maybe you played high school football, maybe it was your job—maybe it’s still your job! Send me a comment on a time when you had to embrace the suck. Send it to Ask Papa Bear at www.riversig.com.
I hope this was helpful.
